Understanding Deep Tissue Massage Treatments
In our Mermaid Waters clinic our focus is on Deep Tissue Massage Therapy. We feel that this type of treatment is effective in considering a holistic approach to your well being.
Deep Tissue Massage therapy is the use of different massage techniques in the treatment of your specific injury, ailment, aches or pains.
We develop a treatment approach and use a range of techniques that can target relaxation, pain management, stress reduction, supporting injury rehabilitation and improving joint or muscle function.
More than just a deep tissue massage, deep tissue massage uses clinical rationale from the information our therapists gather through talking to you about your health concern, physical assessment and movement screening.
By using different relaxation/Swedish techniques and coupling them with myofascial, trigger point therapy and muscle energy techniques the goal is to work systematically with you towards your health goals.
- Relaxation / Swedish Massage
- Remedial massage techniques
- Sports Massage
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Direct or Indirect Myofascial Techniques
- Muscle Energy Techniques
- Dry Needling
How does Deep Tissue Massage work?
Deep Tissue Massage, instead of just rhythmically stroking all the muscles where you have indicated you may have shoulder pain. Our massage therapists will work on other areas that they find through your clinical assessment that may be contributing to your pain. This approach helps to not only address your concerns, but also to work on reducing the potential that it may come back.
This considered approach allows the use of techniques that may target the breakdown of scar tissue that restricts movement, release ‘knots’ or trigger points that may refer to the area you feel pain in.
Sometimes the pain may be cause by fascia (think an interwoven casing that compartmentalises different muscles and structures together) so our therapists will use myofascial release or deep connective tissue techniques, or even have you actively participate in your treatment by using muscle energy techniques.
What Can Deep Tissue Massage help with?
Deep Tissue massage can be used to reduce a whole range of symptoms associated musculoskeletal or sports injuries, stress, and pain management of chronic conditions such as repetitive strain injury.
Deep Tissue massage is not just for those types of injuries or conditions those. It has been shown to be an effective treatment in reducing pain associated with some forms of Osteoarthritis, has positive effects on mood enhancing hormones that can help to reduce anxiety and support and improved quality of life for people experiencing symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Whilst the exact mechanism of how massage effects that body are still being researched, the use of massage by everyday people to help them feel better, move better and sleep better are important considerations as well.
Even if we don’t know your particular condition we will let you know and before booking you in for an appointment we will do a little research.
At times we have sent clients to get a clearance from the doctor, before seeing them to make sure that there your condition is safe to be treated.
We are conveniently located in Mermaid Waters allowing convenient access to clients from Burleigh Waters, Currumbin Waters and even in the Northern Gold Coast suburbs.

What is deep tissue massage?
At Haumanu Health we consider Deep Tissue Massage a preference to massage pressure rather than specific type of soft tissue therapy. Where Swedish/Relaxation massage is considered “lighter” and “gliding” type of massage some people seem to consider deep tissue massage to have greater benefits health benefits because it gets “deeper”.
As a part of our services we offer at Haumanu Health one of the first questions we ask is about the type of massage you prefer. When clients say they prefer a deep tissue massage, what they tells our therapists is that you, as the client prefer a firmer amount of pressure.
What does that mean?
Pressure preferences in massage vary as do the techniques. If you tell a massage that you like Deep Tissue massage that every technique they do will be deep? Well the short answer is no.
Our therapists are trained in the safe and appropriate application of massage techniques. That includes identifying the safe amount of pressure to apply. The old adage of ‘No Pain, No gain’ is not one we prescribe to. There are some techniques that will may cause some discomfort and our team will communicate before, during and after using that technique to ensure that you are comfortable, you know what to expect and that you understand why we have chosen it.
Does that mean you only do light pressure massage?
Not at all. What is means is that we assess the appropriate level of pressure to protect your body and meet your personal expectations. There is nothing worse than a massage that leave you feeling like nothing was done, but our job is educate our clients on the benefits of each soft tissue technique we use.
The body has some very delicate structures that need to be considered when you come in for treatment. Digging elbows and thumbs into these structures can cause more damage and leave you feeling worse that when you arrived – which is not the reason you come in for massage therapy in the first place.
Is Deep Tissue Massage Dangerous?
As with anything to do with health safe and appropriate application is the most important consideration. At Haumanu Health we work with you to make sure we are aware of your medical history, conditions you may have, delicate structures in the area we are working on and signs to look for that let us know that the technique may be causing undue discomfort and possibly injury.
Besides our anatomical knowledge our massage therapists take precautions at each stage of your treatment. We take a full medical history, we ask questions to understand the onset of your pain or symptoms, we ask more questions to understand if we need to refer you on for medical clearance and throughout the treatment gain consent and check your understanding and comfort levels. This is how we apply a safety-first approach to your wellbeing.
